TIGER  YEAR  CELEBRATIONS  IN HOPE TO RAISE AWARENESS

Bournemouth University students will be helping with the annual Chinese New Year celebration for the first time next Monday.

A team of six students in the undergraduate events management course has been working with the
Bournemouth Chinese School, in Moordown, in the run-up to the event.

The aim is to promote cultural awareness in the community of Bournemouth, and also among the
children of the Bournemouth Chinese School.

Liam Lazenby, the team leader, says: “ We don’t want them to lose touch of their heritage.”
The students have spent time creating flyers containing interesting information about the Chinese
culture, making decorations as well as spreading the words to other Bournemouth schools.
Liam remarks: “Everyone as a team feels really positive and excited about doing this event, as it has
allowed us to work with a client of a different culture”

On Monday, there will be a dragon dance going from the town hall to the Bournemouth Library,
where there will be Chinese martial arts displays and arts exhibition. As this is the year of the tiger,
the tiger mascot created by the students, will be seen throughout the library.

Mr. Anthony Yuen, Vice Chairman of the Bournemouth Chinese School, appreciates the help so far.
He says: “We need more support because the event is getting bigger, and we want to make it more
popular for people to know about the Chinese culture.”

Apart from the new year celebrations, the Lantern festival by the Chinese school which takes place
two weeks later, is also expected to attract more guests.
